Nick’s Surprise Proposal | Austin Wedding Photographer

Every so often you get invited to be a part of something really special. I mean, REALLY special. I love weddings; I love being a part of those huge life events for folks. But THIS day, this was special because it doesn’t happen very often. I hope lots and lots of people will see this blog, and make this kind of event become more common. =)

A former bride of mine, Kellie, emailed me. Her little sister Whitney was about to get engaged, but she didn’t know it yet! I was totally thrilled–Whitney was one of the first young ladies I ever photographed; I did her high school senior portraits. Those portraits got me her big sister Kellie’s wedding a few years later, and now Kellie was coming back to see if I could capture Whitney getting engaged. I have now been in business long enough to have families come back as repeat customers. I am seeing high school grads grow up, finish college and get married. Excuse me a moment while I blow my nose (talk amongst yourselves!).

I actually was photographing a wedding in San Antonio that day, but Nick assured me his plan was to propose early that morning. Perfect! We arrived at the bridge (a popular spot for engagements, apparently!) on a bright Saturday morning in June. It felt like 100% humidity and Nick was already dying, ha. I’m sure his nervousness had nothing to do with it! His parents and Whitney’s parents were all in on the plan. Each person held a sign Nick had made. They positioned themselves on the bridge, while we waited for Kellie to arrive with Whitney. Her trick was telling Whitney that the whole family was involved in a maternity session for her and Jimmy (added bonus! Kellie and Jimmy are pregnant!!). Nick was so nervous about dropping the ring into the boiling waters of the Guadalupe below that he had the ring tied to a ribbon. Seeing that stunner he’d bought Whitney, I couldn’t agree more.

Congratulations Nick! She said YES!
